If you or a loved one participates in sports, good for you! Not only is it great exercise, but teaches patience, self-control, and team building. What’s not great is that it can damage your mouth and teeth if they’re not protected. Today’s blog talks about the importance of mouth guards.

What is a Mouth Guard?

Mouth guards are a customized appliance that you wear over your teeth any time you play a sport, especially contact sports such as, hockey, soccer, football, basketball, rugby, etc. It protects you from blows to the face and head. When you contact Steven J. Brazis, DDS, we can schedule an appointment with Dr. Steven J. Brazis and fit you with the perfect sport’s mouth guard in Sacramento, California.

What Types of Mouth Guards Are Available?

There are several types of mouth guards from which you can choose that are tear-resistant, comfortable, and resilient. The three types of mouth guards we offer include:

– Boil and bite mouth guards, in a pre-formed shape, and usually altered by boiling in water, then you bite into the cooled plastic to fit with your mouth.
– Custom-made mouth guards – Your dentist is able to take impressions and provide the most comfortable fit, coupled with the best protection.
– Stock mouth guards – Preformed and read to wear, these less expensive mouth guards don’t fit very well, and can be bulky and make breathing and talking difficult.
